A stereo SACD recording can stream data at an uncompressed rate of 5.6 Mbps; four times higher than the rate for Red Book CD stereo audio. This gives the format a greater dynamic range and wider frequency response than the CD. The SACD format is capable of delivering a dynamic range of 120dB from 20Hz to 20kHz and an extended frequency response up to 100kHz, although most currently available players list an upper limit of 70—90kHz, and practical limits reduce this to 50kHz.

A multitrack masterpiece. In an era where string sections were common in pop music, Collin’s renditions of a variety of well-known songs have been transformed into lush pieces that are nearly footsteps away from easy listening. However, that doesn’t mean they are bland and lack depth, rather listeners will hear wonderful dynamics and a real sense of emotion heard among the dozen tracks on this SACD.

The quad soundstage is warm and full with a real immediacy that allows the songs to breathe no matter the number of parts. Both Sides Now, the most well known song from this collection, opens with a thin merry-go-round organ arpeggio placed in the back right channel. Bass guitar and light drums are added between the front channels and back left speaker respectfully. As the song builds vocals and strings, among other instrumentation are incorporated, making this one of the most immersive and layer rich songs.

Yet even on one of the most stripped down pieces I have ever heard in quad, Farewell to Tarwathie delivers a fantastic surround experience with Collin’s a Capella voice densely reverberating across the front channels and settling in the rears. But it is the sound of the whales which are spread across the back channels which fill out the multi-channel soundscape, lending to the special character of this song.

It becomes very evident just how good the original recordings of this album were when listening to the acoustic bass on her rendition of the Beatles classic In My Life. Let’s remember this is a 4.0 disc, yet the bass is very rich and simply sounds amazing. The embellished acoustic guitar work is sweet and delicate as it accompanies several other parts which are evenly spread around the four corners of the room.

I would skip the stereo layer as it is thinner and lacks the dynamics so easily heard on the quad mix. This was his final record to feature the entire original band, pulling out no stops, making this 1973 release a grand finale. The best tracks are certainly the most well known including the rollicking title track, plus the Top 20 anthem “Teenage Lament '74,” featuring Liza Minnelli, Ronnie Spector, Labelle and the Pointer Sisters on backing vocals. Returning to a simple basic rock sound, the album climbed to #10 on the Billboard 200 charts.

Unfortunately, the controversial album title and artwork caused issues in various countries such as South Africa where authorities intercepted the album and removed the inserts of the ‘nude wrestling’ emporium before allowing them to be sent to record shops. Also label management in North America had to negotiate with a number of retailers to carry the album, however the Muscle of Love cardboard box and ‘water stain’ packaging still presented issues in certain places. So forget about the sound, maybe you’ll just want this disc for the included miniature replica of the Institute of Nude Wrestling book cover, which includes the nude wrestling insert, plus sleeve pics with the booklet, although the lyrics are missing. More likely though, you’ll want it for both.

The quad layer of the Audio Fidelity SACD serves up plenty of zest with gritty guitars, punchy horns, and a brightly balanced mix. The four corner separation is excellent, with wonderful use of the quad soundstage. The Alice Cooper Group has added some sweet layering, which includes riffing and rhythmic guitar parts placed in the rear channels.

Don’t expect an all out rockin’ album, as there are hints of Dixieland and ballots tossed in among the rockers. Crazy Little Child opens with acoustic piano in the rear channels and Alice’s vocals reverberating from the front. There is a real club performance aural feel which gives the horns and guitars plenty of space as they reverberate between the front and back channels.

The title track Muscle of Love starts with a sizzling guitar riff from the rear left channel, which is quickly answered with bass and drums centered up front and an alternate guitar from the rear right channel. This straight forward triangle use of the quad stage is only added to with vocals yet effectively provides for a fantastic surround feel.

While I find it hard to get over the lack of warmth on the quad layer, the immersive mixes make up for this shortcoming. Like previous tracks Teenage Lament '74 makes excellent use of all four channels with backing vocals placed in the rear along with guitar parts and delays that provide space for the main vocals.

The stereo layer is tonally a bit better when compare to the quad, however it is squashed a bit, somewhat constrained by the limitation of two channel audio. Regardless of my complaints, these mixes cut through, they are not muddled, and likely created specifically this way to punch into the listeners space.

Recommended only for fans of Alice Cooper and quad collectors who must have it all. A largely unknown duo whose eponymous debut flopped. An impromptu meeting in a supermarket that led to a fact-finding trip to Sound City Studios. The backstory behind Fleetwood Mac's self-titled album is nearly as incredible as the music on the 1975 recording — a blockbuster that altered pop-rock history, and found newcomers Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks permanently changing the profile and popularity of the British ensemble.

Sourced from the original analog master tapes and housed in mini-LP-style gatefold packaging, Mobile Fidelity's numbered-edition hybrid SACD of the 9x platinum-selling effort plays with stunning transparency, dynamics, and detail. This reissue captures what went down in the California studio with arresting presence and sumptuous tonality.

The innate chemistry among the five musicians can be heard here in stunning clarity, the taut albeit flexible rhythms distinguished with palpable grip, the blended vocals and airy harmonies benefitting from seemingly unlimited frequency extension. The thrilling results speak to the band's bond as well as healthy tension that led to recordings that more than five decades later remain revered for their exceptional realism, openness, textures, imaging, and soundstaging. And that says nothing about the freshness of the songs themselves.

Six of those tunes were written or co-written by Buckingham or Nicks, who lent the band — reeling from the departure of guitarist Bob Welch — a diversity, soulfulness, and breadth it lacked in the past. Then again, the romantically involved partners weren't exactly burning up the charts on their own. Their Buckingham Nicks LP was largely ignored upon release and found the twosome questioning their futures. But fate has a weird way of operating, and rather than recruiting another six-string blues virtuoso into the mix, Fleetwood Mac called an audible.

Prompted to visit Sound City Studios after telling someone in a grocery store he needed a place to record Fleetwood Mac's 10th album, Fleetwood heard Buckingham Nicks played back by Olsen as a demonstration of the studio's capabilities. Unable to forget what he heard, the drummer soon invited Buckingham to join his band. Displaying his now-famous reluctance to cede any creative control, Buckingham initially hedged before accepting on one condition: He and Nicks came as a package.

That agreement stands as one of the most significant career-altering moves any band ever made. Suffice it to say Nicks' Plan B — "we can always quit," she reasoned to Buckingham — stayed on the backburner. After rehearsing together for just 10 days and sussing out potential roles, the new iteration of Fleetwood Mac entered Sound City in January 1975 and laid down the tracks for the showstopper Rolling Stone put on its Greatest Albums of All Time list.

In many ways, Fleetwood Mac got far more than they bargained for in taking on the American duo. Buckingham and Nicks arrived loaded for bear. "Monday Morning," "Rhiannon," and "I'm So Afraid" had already been workshopped and penciled in for a second Buckingham-Nicks record. "Crystal" was re-purposed and re-imagined after its original inclusion of Buckingham Nicks.

Nicks also brought another recently penned song to the sessions, a beautiful gem none other than "Landslide." McVie later admitted that the quality of material triggered a competitive spirit within her and inspired her to take her own songwriting to another level. "Warm Ways," "Say You Love Me," and "Over My Head" underscore that determination.
