Pure Ranking, released in 1979, is one of Horace Andy’s standout albums and a showcase of his unmistakable voice—high, soulful, and instantly recognizable. Produced during a fertile period for reggae and roots music, the record pairs Andy’s emotive delivery with heavy basslines, crisp rhythms, and socially conscious lyrics. Songs like Pure Ranking and Natty Dread a Weh She Want exemplify his ability to balance heartfelt expression with infectious grooves, while tracks such as Poor Michael and Good Vibes highlight his gift for melody and spiritual depth.
The album captures both the urgency of late-’70s roots reggae and the timeless qualities of Andy’s artistry, making it a record that resonates with fans of classic reggae as well as those discovering the genre today. With its mix of conscious messages, uplifting energy, and Andy’s inimitable tone, Pure Ranking remains a key entry in his catalog and an essential listen for reggae collectors.
